THE MEETING OF TWO FOOTBALL WORLDS
In the world of
football soccer, Leonel Messi is, figuratively,
a giant whose latest accolade was being named the 2015 EUROPEAN PLAYER OF THE
YEAR. And in the world of NFL football, the
literally giant defensive end JJ Watt,
at 6’5, was named the AP 2014 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.
Equals, right?
Not according to
JJ Watt. It turns out that he idolizes, really idolizes, Messi. So when they had a chance meeting in Houston
this week, Watt was thrilled, calling Messi “the greatest football player on
the planet” on Twitter and giving him a signed jersey.
The national team of Argentina was in Houston practicing for the friendly with Mexico, and Watt was gearing up for the season opener with the Houston Texans—all of which brought about the meeting of two very different players from to very different football worlds.
